Langar Habitat Bank: Biodiversity Net Gain in Nottinghamshire’s Stroom Dyke Corridor

Langar Habitat Bank is a 10-hectare Biodiversity Net Gain scheme located near the village of Langar in Nottinghamshire.

Situated within the Stroom Dyke floodplain, the project transitions modified pasture into a mosaic of species-rich grassland and mixed scrub habitats, strengthening ecological connectivity while maintaining public access via an existing Public Right of Way.

This is stewardship-led BNG delivery in a flood-prone agricultural landscape.

What Has Been Delivered?

The scheme establishes:

  • Approximately 7.5 hectares of species-rich neutral grassland

  • Meadow and wetland seed mixes tailored to flood influence

  • Diversified mixed scrub with five or more native species

  • Three new species-rich hedgerows

  • Retention and management of existing ponds, ditches and trees

Soil investigations informed phased nutrient reduction to create optimal conditions for meadow establishment, Hay cropping and low-density grazing support sustainable land use alongside biodiversity objectives.

Ecological Objectives

The design benefits:

  • Brown long-eared bat

  • Soprano and common pipistrelle

  • Hedgehog

  • Common blue butterfly

  • Dragonfly species

  • Red and amber-listed bird assemblages

Habitat enhancement along the Stroom Dyke corridor improves riparian buffering and landscape-scale connectivity.

Governance and Long-Term Stewardship

Independent oversight is provided by RSK Biocensus as Responsible Body and we deliver:

  • Habitat implementation

  • Quarterly inspections during establishment

  • Five-yearly review cycles

  • Adaptive management responses

Flood risk considerations are embedded throughout the management strategy.

This ensures the scheme remains resilient, responsive and compliant across the 30-year period.
