Kimberworth Habitat Bank: Best-Practice Biodiversity Net Gain Delivery in South Yorkshire.

Kimberworth Habitat Bank is a 25-hectare Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) scheme in South Yorkshire, transforming intensively managed farmland into a resilient, connected ecological landscape.

Located within the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council area and the Yorkshire Coalfield National Character Area, the project demonstrates how habitat banking can combine ecological ambition with practical long-term stewardship.

This is not simply habitat creation.

It is long-term, stewardship-led BNG delivery grounded in evidence, landscape ecology and practical land management.

What Has Been Delivered?

The scheme establishes:

  • Species-rich meadow

  • Native woodland expansion

  • Six new species-rich hedgerows

  • Mixed scrub ecotones

  • Retention and enhancement of 2 hectares of existing woodland

The design strengthens links with adjacent ancient woodland and the Grange Park Local Wildlife Site, improving ecological connectivity across the wider landscape.

Historic mapping informed field pattern restoration, ensuring habitats are both functional and landscape-led.

Evidence-Led and Stewardship-Driven

We led the delivery from site assessment through to design and long-term stewardship planning, integrating:

  • UKHab baseline surveys

  • Soil and habitat suitability analysis

  • Local biological records

  • Species-targeted enhancements

The scheme supports common pipistrelle bats, hedgehogs, red-listed birds including redwing, mistle thrush and song thrush and white-letter hairstreak butterflies.

Habitat protection is secured via a Conservation Covenant, with independent oversight from RSK Biocensus as Responsible Body.

Clear monitoring frameworks and adaptive management protocols ensure compliance and ecological performance across the statutory 30-year period.
